Time Out
There are too many to count if we’re talking about must-visit places of all time in Asia. However, specific destinations in the region are ripe for a visit in 2025, whether because they’ve recently become more accessible or have a brand new attraction you want to be the first to catch. That’s where Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2025 comes in, with its handpicked list of 10 countries, 10 regions, and 10 cities you must book next year.
Five destinations proudly represent Asia, spanning from Laos to Japan, with a good mix of popular spots and under-the-radar destinations. In the ‘countries’ category is Laos, a less-visited destination that the publication touts for its new high-speed international rail connecting it to Yunnan, China, and Kazakhstan, which Lonely Planet tips as an ‘immersive destination for travellers in search of unspoiled adventure’.
Meanwhile, The Terai in Nepal gets time to shine in the ‘regions’ category. Away from popular mountainous areas like the Himalayas, this vast lowland region in Nepal’s south is home to the birthplace of Buddha and the rarest of wildlife, like Bengal tigers and one-horned rhinos.
Chiang Mai, Thailand and Osaka, Japan, get a shoutout in the ‘cities’ category. The first offers a refreshing change from the bustle of Bangkok with its slower pace and cooler weather; Lonely Planet also highlights its distinctive food culture, calling out the Chiang Mai Food Festival in January as a timely event to experience the best the city offers. Osaka is no stranger to anyone because of its famous Dotonbori district, Osaka Castle, and Universal Studios Japan. However, visit in 2025 when the city will be extra buzzy with innovative ideas during the second edition of Expo.
